Indeed we can fear and we can love the same person at the same time! In several ways. I will show an example that Insha Allah will help one to understand what fear of Allah (swt) and loving Him at the same time means. The Holy Qur’an states:
O ye who believe! Fear Allah, and let every soul look to what (provision) He has sent forth for the morrow. Yea, fear Allah. for Allah is well-acquainted with (all) that ye do. 59:18
Examples (1):
Love: Real love is strong feelings and emotions, respect and discipline. Our real love for our parents bring us some sort of fear, where we fear to disobey them, fear to go against their wishes, fear to be disrespectful to them, fear to hurt them in any way. These fears help us to become better people in our life’s conduct, and our parents are well pleased with us, so we gain from their wealth and from their strength. But we who displeases our parents and hurt them, we earn their anger and as such we become losers. So this is the way we can earn Allah (swt) love and also His anger. Fear Allah (swt) is an act of preparation and provision for a better life conduct on this earth and in the hereafter. The fear of Allah (swt) is a kind of love; fear to earn his displeasure by disobeying Him and His Apostles: This fear will help us with self restraint from several things and will put us in His Kingdom.
Evil have its sly way of betraying the weak faith: They (the evil ones) say, how can we help you to get close to God? Don’t you see we are afraid of Him, for He is cruel to man. May Allah (swt) deaf our ears to the speeches from ignorant fool’s taunts about Allah (swt) and His Rasool (pbuh). The Holy Qur’an states:
Turnest thou not thy attention to those who turn (in friendship) to such as have the Wrath of Allah upon them? They are neither of you nor of them, and they swear to falsehood knowingly. 58:14.
Allah has prepared for them a severe Penalty: evil indeed are their deeds. 58:15.
They have made their oaths a screen (for their misdeeds): thus they obstruct (men) from the Path of Allah. therefore shall they have a humiliating Penalty. 58:16.
Those who resist Allah and His Messenger will be among those most humiliated. 58:20.
Allah has decreed: “It is I and My apostles who must prevail”: For Allah is One full of strength, able to enforce His Will. 58:21
