Why the people break up and divide their religion into sects?

The Holy Qur’an states:

O ye who believe! if ye fear Allah, He will grant you a criterion (to judge between right and wrong) 8:29

As for those who divide their religion and break up into sects, thou hast no part in them in the least: their affair is with Allah. He will in the end tell them the truth of all that they did.6:159.

To break up and to divide religion into sects, it is not very pleasing to Allah (swt), but it is pleasing to the ones own selfish desire who are out for destruction.  Allah (swt) gives knowledge to every soul, but two things He didn’t give to everyone and that is wisdom and understanding. Only the people that have strong fear in their hearts, to do the things that would please Allah (swt): they are the ones that would gain wisdom and understanding, and they are the ones who would be able to read the Holy Qur’an and understand it, and follow it in the right way, and only they are the ones who can teach the right way. Also in our every day prayers, we are asking Allah (swt) to show us the straightway, the way of those on whom Thou hast bestowed Thy grace, and who walk in the light of God Almighty grace.

Some people wants name and fame and they would do as they pleases, even if it hurt and upsetting to Allah (swt) and His Prophet’s teachings. The Holy Qur’an states:

O mankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that ye may know each other (not that ye may despise (each other). Verily the most honoured of you in the sight of Allah is (he who is) the most righteous of you. And Allah has full knowledge and is well acquainted (with all things). 49:13.

Only those are Believers who have believed in Allah and His Messenger, and have never since doubted, but have striven with their belongings and their persons in the Cause of Allah: Such are the sincere ones. 49:15.

Before Allah (swt) we are all one and all mankind descended from one pair of parents, tribes, races and nations are convenient labels by which we may know certain differing characteristics. One cannot deceive Allah (swt) by attaching a certain label to them. Islam in itself is a precious privilege; by accepting it we confer no favors on its preacher or on any community. If the acceptance is from the heart it is a great favor done to one. As the Holy Qur’an states:

Mankind was one single nation, and Allah sent Messengers with glad tidings and warnings; and with them He sent the Book in truth, to judge between people in matters wherein they differed; but the People of the Book, after the clear Signs came to them, did not differ among themselves, except through selfish contumacy. Allah by His Grace Guided the believers to the Truth, concerning that wherein they differed. For Allah guided whom He will to a path that is straight. 2:213.

O ye who believe! the law of equality is prescribed to you in cases of murder: the free for the free, the slave for the slave, the woman for the woman. But if any remission is made by the brother of the slain, then grant any reasonable demand, and compensate him with handsome gratitude, this is a concession and a Mercy from your Lord. After this whoever exceeds the limits shall be in grave penalty. 2:178.

Behold, thy Lord said to the angels: “I will create a vicegerent on earth.” They said: “Wilt Thou place therein one who will make mischief therein and shed blood?- whilst we do celebrate Thy praises and glorify Thy holy (name)?” He said: “I know what ye know not.” 2:30

Some people are very arrogant and they are not true to themselves. Follow these verses from the Holy Qur’an:

Fain would they deceive Allah and those who believe, but they only deceive themselves, and realise (it) not! 2:9.

In their hearts is a disease; and Allah has increased their disease: And grievous is the penalty they (incur), because they are false (to themselves). 2:10.

When it is said to them: “Make not mischief on the earth,” they say: “Why, we only want to make peace!” 2:11.

Of a surety, they are the ones who make mischief, but they realise (it) not. 2:12.

When it is said to them: “Believe as the others believe:” They say: “Shall we believe as the fools believe?” Nay, of a surety they are the fools, but they do not know. 2:13.

When they meet those who believe, they say: “We believe;” but when they are alone with their evil ones, they say: “We are really with you: We (were) only jesting.” 2:14.

Allah will throw back their mockery on them, and give them rope in their trespasses; so they will wander like blind ones (To and fro). 2:15.

These are they who have bartered Guidance for error: But their traffic is profitless, and they have lost true direction. 2:16.

Ye man! What wonderful destiny is thine? Created to be Allah (swt) Vicegerent on earth? A little higher than Angels! Yet beguiled by evil.

In the beautiful fellowship of the righteous, there is room for all, of every grade of spiritual advancement, from the highest to the most ordinary, but for some people without understanding, they act with haste and arrogance, the pride in them causing them to look at any good or righteous Imam and feel more higher and powerful within themselves, so as to cause fight and break up the religion just to eat the Imam or trip him up, or disturb him from his position of being a leader. Spite and envy is the cause (most of the time) for religion to split up or break up into sects. These people worship only their power, their arrogance action neither profit themselves nor profit others. The Holy Qur’an states:

(Their doom is) because Allah sent down the Book in truth but those who seek causes of dispute in the Book are in a schism Far (from the purpose). 2:176

From the mere physical regulation we are at once lifted up into the sphere of morals and faith, for the one who acts and reacts on the other. If we are constantly carping at the wholesome regulations, we shall do nothing but cause division and schisms among the people, and ordered society would tend to break up.

In the days of the old, the people used to harass the Apostles with all kind of foolish questions, we must not follow that bad example. Questions should be asked only for real instructions and guidance.
